Edward Dwight Wilson, age 96, of Hazlehurst passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2025 at his residence under the care of Community Hospice.
Mr. Wilson was born October 24, 1928 in Jeff Davis County to the late Henry Dallas Wilson and the late Clara Mae Thompson Wilson. He was a lifetime member of First Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and a Sunday School teacher for many years. He went on many mission trips to Honduras and Thailand to build hospitals and orphanages. Mr. Wilson was the first Eagle Scout in Jeff Davis County and was a Veteran of the United States Army having served in the Korean War. He was the owner and operator of Wilson Hardware Company which was started in 1905 by his grandfather and father, Henry Dallas Wilson and George Dallas Wilson. He also served as Sheriff of Jeff Davis County (1985-1988); and was a member of the Jeff Davis Veterans Association and was a part of the Gideons International. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret Wilson Norman and a brother, H.D. Wilson, Jr., and brothers-in-law, John L. Underwood and Shearwin Underwood.
Survivors include his wife of 72 years, Sue Underwood Wilson of Hazlehurst; daughter, Susan (Carroll) Perry of Hazlehurst; son, Kent (Cynthia) Wilson of Rabun Gap, GA; granddaughter, Caroline (Lance) Hendley of Nashville, GA; great grandchildren, Reese Elizabeth Hendley and Beau Parker Hendley; several nieces and nephews; and caregivers, Nancy Jackson, Diana Habersham, Sylvia Chandler, Karen Guerrero and Darshika Clay.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 2, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Brad Waters and Rev. Rick Brown officiating.
Interment will follow in Palms Memorial with Military Honors rendered by Jeff Davis Veterans Association.
Active pallbearers will be Royce Presley, Steve Land, Stanley Land, Ted Yawn, Steve Underwood, Gary Perry and Michael Lay.
Honorary pallbearers will be staff & nurses of Community Hospice.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Church.
Remembrances may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 30 North Tallahassee Street, Hazlehurst, GA 31539.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
