Janice Riner Allagood, 89, passed away on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at her residence in Carbondale, CO.
She was a native of Swainsboro, Georgia, but lived most of her life in Baxley, Georgia. She is preceded in death by her parents, Remus and Sallie Mae Riner; husband Jack D. Allagood and son C. Jeffrey Allagood; sisters, Jacquelyn Price, and JoAnn Thompson.
Janice graduated from Berry College in Rome with a degree in Home Economics. Not long after she began teaching high school in Baxley, she met her future husband who fell in love with her (and her cooking!) After marriage, she acquired a degree in Elementary Education from Georgia
Southern and finished her 30-year career teaching 3rd grade. She enjoyed teaching and considered it a “give back” for all the opportunities education had provided her.
Faith, family and service were important to Janice. She was a devoted member of the Baxley First United Methodist Church, where she was involved with choir, UMW, Sunday school, Church Missions, and the nursery. In the community, she was a member of the Georgia Retired Educators Association, Pine Forest Garden Club, and the Arts Council.
Janice had a passion for dogs and cats and rescued strays who eventually became her “pets.” She gardened with care and displayed beautiful flowers to all who passed by. She also enjoyed playing Bridge, reading, sewing, traveling and of course, UGA football.
She moved to Colorado in 2018 to be near her daughter and son-in-law. Her new friends were drawn to her southern drawl and sweet mannerisms, and they fondly called her “Dixie.” She still considered Baxley her home and returned often to visit friends, loved ones and her church family.
Survivors include her daughter Jill (Richard) Rogers of Carbondale, CO, step-granddaughters, Erin (Kyle) Crawley and Rebecca Rogers of Carbondale, CO, Kristen Rogers of Nashville, TN, and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are niece Sandra (Chuck) Mason, and three nephews, Mitch (Tracey) Price, Jim Thompson, and Jon Thompson. Several other relatives also survived.
Visitation is scheduled for 10:00, followed by a funeral service at 11:00, on Tuesday, December 30, at Baxley First Church. Entombment will follow in Omega Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Christian Appalachian Project or First Church in Baxley, Georgia.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
