Wadis A. Shipes, age 81, of Cedar Crossing passed away Sunday, February 18, 2024 at Community Hospice of Vidalia.
Mr. Shipes was born November 7, 1942 in Appling County to the late Elbert Shipes and the late Elvie Thomas Shipes. He was a member of Philippi Baptist Church and served in the Army National Guard. He worked in his earlier years for Howard Brannen Slaughtering, Baxley Tire & Recapping, and Juanice Presley’s Pet Milk. He retired as a rollback operator for Woody Folsom Auto Group.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Shipes was preceded in death by his brothers, Bill (Bobbie Jo) Shipes, Bobby Shipes, and Jimmy Shipes; sisters, Dennie (Robert) Kersey and Lucy Overstreet; and his adopted parents, Juanice & Janelle Presley.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtice Shipes of Cedar Crossing; sons, Kevin (Dana) Shipes of Baxley, Doug (Rima) Hutcheson of Ann Arbor, MI, Curt (Christi) Shipes of Milledgeville, Bryan Shipes of Baxley, Dylan Shipes of Cedar Crossing, and Zachary (Shannon) Sapp of Savannah; sisters, Brenda (Andy) Love and Diane (Stan) Wilson both of Texas and David (Bertie) Shipes of Baxley; mother-in-law, Lillie Mae Copeland of Cedar Crossing; special sister, Angie Presley of Baxley; sisters-in-law, Vinnie Shipes and Gail Shipes; and a brother-in-law, Dale Overstreet. Thirteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews also survive.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, February 22, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home with Rev. Mitch Jones officiating. The visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
